Sansi House participated in Design Shanghai for the first time from June 19th to 22nd, 2024. The theme of our exhibit is ‘Bunga Rampai’, which builds on our ‘Weaving Cultures‘ art installation showcased at Design ShenZhen in March 2024.
‘Bunga’ means flower. ‘Rampai’ means potpourri. ‘Bunga Rampai’ is an anthology, collected from diverse perspectives. We infuse the uniqueness of indigenous Indonesian cultures and the Dutch’s colonial heritage into the vibrant Chinese-Indonesian ‘peranakan’ aesthetics.
What blossoms is a lifestyle collection that celebrates history and diversity.
TRADITIONS IN CRAFT
We promote the rich and exquisite traditions of Indonesian craft, exemplified by Indonesian Batik. The word ‘Batik’ is Javanese in origin. It came from the Javanese word ‘amba’ meaning to write and ‘titik’ meaning dot. UNESCO designated Indonesian Batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in October 2009. Often handed down within families for generations, the craft of batik is intertwined with the cultural and spiritual identity of the Indonesian people.
Our exhibit features mainly vintage Peranakan Batik, such as Indo-Dutch and Peranakan Chinese styles. Another highlight is the wall décor with ‘Canting Cap’, a tool crafted from pure copper for Batik stamp use. Each piece takes two months to construct manually.
CRAFTED FROM NATURAL MATERIALS
Indonesia’s wealth of natural resources is the inspiration of our handicraft products. We prioritize environmental care by using natural materials, developing community-based partnerships with local farmers, and adhering to sustainability regulations.
We are dedicated to preserving the rich handicraft traditions by rediscovering, developing, and passing its wisdom down to the communities. An example of this commitment is our process elevation, where we implement the use of moulds and jigs to ensure the consistency of handwoven products.
NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH
We are very pleased to announce that two of our handcrafted products have been featured for the new product launch.
