Indonesia is rich in natural resources. Its archipelagic structure and strategic equatorial location provides an ideal climate for the growth of diverse flora and fauna. Ensuring such biodiversity to flourish requires intentionality. That’s why we always ensure that we’re sourcing materials sustainably.
NATURAL HANDICRAFT MATERIALS
Rattan
Sega rattan has the perfect reed diameter consistency and better color absorption. The outer skin has been stripped, showing the naturally light inner core. Sega means strong and formidable in the native Dayak language of Kalimantan. It is also a popular name given to boys.
Pandanus
Pandanus grows near coastal areas in Indonesia where they have been exposed to extreme sun, wind, and seawater. They are more durable and don’t get mold easily. Mainly female farmers from low-income households weave this material for extra earnings while taking care of their families at home.
Banana Bark
Did you know that banana trees can only yield fruits once? The trees are then cut down to be replaced with new plantings. Banana bark is a waste material from felled banana trees and upcycled to create beautiful handcrafted storage.
Mendong
Mendong, a water grass abundant in Indonesia, is a sustainable and high-quality material with exceptionally fine weaves due to its long grass blades. After drying, the grass turns an ashy brown color which can deepen over time, adding versatility to any interior.
